Bangladesh have dramatically changed the complexion of the World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 race after producing a stunning nine-wicket victory over Australia in the first Test in Darwin.

The result gave Bangladesh their first-ever Test victory in Australia and significantly reduced Australia's advantage at the top of the WTC standings. Bangladesh climbed to fourth place, while India remain fifth as the race for the two WTC Final spots becomes increasingly competitive.

Bangladesh Shake Up the WTC Race

Australia had entered the Test with a commanding 87.50% points percentage (PCT). Following their defeat, that figure has fallen to 77.78%, bringing them much closer to the teams chasing them.

South Africa are second with a 75.00% PCT, while New Zealand sit third on 72.22%. Bangladesh have now moved into fourth with 66.67%.

The result means the top four teams are separated by just 11.11 percentage points.

That is a significant development in a competition where points percentage, rather than total points, determines the final standings.

Australia’s Lead Cut After Shock Defeat

Australia remain at the top of the WTC table with 84 points from nine Tests, but their position is no longer as comfortable as it appeared before the Darwin Test.

The defeat demonstrated how quickly the WTC standings can change. A single loss reduced Australia's PCT by almost 10 percentage points and allowed three teams to close the gap.

Australia will now have to respond in the second Test against Bangladesh if they are to prevent their lead from shrinking further.

Bangladesh Make Huge Jump to Fourth

Bangladesh have been one of the biggest beneficiaries of the result.

Their record now stands at three wins, one defeat and one draw from five Tests, giving them a 66.67% PCT.

The victory was particularly impressive given the manner in which Bangladesh dominated large portions of the Test.

Tanzid Hasan scored a century in Bangladesh's first innings, while Hasan Mahmud produced a six-wicket haul as the visitors secured a massive 228-run first-innings lead.

Australia were unable to recover from that deficit and were eventually bowled out in their second innings, leaving Bangladesh with just 57 runs to chase.

The nine-wicket victory was Bangladesh's first Test win in Australia after previous defeats in their two earlier appearances Down Under.

India’s WTC Challenge Becomes Tougher

India remain fifth with a 48.15% PCT after nine Tests.

While the gap between India and the leading teams is significant, the WTC cycle is far from over. India's remaining fixtures give them an opportunity to make up ground, but they will need a strong run of results.

The ongoing two-Test series against Sri Lanka is particularly important.

Sri Lanka currently sit sixth with a 41.67% PCT, meaning India have an opportunity to improve their position while simultaneously denying a rival team valuable points.

India's challenge is complicated by the fact that several teams above them have already established strong PCT figures.

A sustained winning run will therefore be crucial if India are to move back into serious contention for the WTC Final.

Bangladesh Can Now Dream of the WTC Final

Bangladesh's position is perhaps the biggest talking point after the Darwin result.

With a 66.67% PCT after just five Tests, they are now firmly in the top-four conversation.

Their next opportunity is enormous.

Australia and Bangladesh will meet again in the second Test from August 22 at the Great Barrier Reef Arena in South Mackay.

A Bangladesh victory would give them a 2-0 series win and potentially push their WTC position even higher.

Australia, meanwhile, desperately need to respond.

South Africa and New Zealand Remain Strong Contenders

Bangladesh's victory also brings South Africa and New Zealand into sharper focus.

South Africa's 75.00% PCT puts them just behind Australia, while New Zealand are only slightly further back at 72.22%.

Both teams have played fewer Tests than Australia, meaning their positions could change substantially as the cycle progresses.

For now, however, both are in an excellent position to challenge for one of the two WTC Final places.

Australia Still Have the Advantage

Despite the setback, Australia remain the favourites to finish among the top two.

They have won seven of their nine Tests and still possess the highest PCT in the championship.

However, the Darwin defeat demonstrated just how quickly the WTC table can change.

Australia's PCT dropped from 87.50% to 77.78% after a single defeat, while Bangladesh moved from 58.33% to 66.67%.

The second Test in Mackay could therefore have major implications for both sides.

A victory for Australia would restore some of their lost momentum. Another Bangladesh win could completely transform the battle at the top.

WTC Final Race Wide Open

The Darwin Test has turned what looked like a relatively straightforward WTC race into a much more competitive contest.

Australia remain first, but South Africa, New Zealand and Bangladesh are all within striking distance. India, meanwhile, have a significant opportunity to climb the table if they can put together a strong run in their remaining Tests.

With so much cricket still to be played, the two WTC Final spots are far from decided.
