Shubman Gill Cleared for Sri Lanka Test After Injury Scare

India have received a major boost ahead of the first Test against Sri Lanka, with captain Shubman Gill declared fully fit after recovering from the right ring-finger injury that had raised concerns over his availability.

India spin-bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule confirmed that Gill has recovered well and is ready to lead the team in the opening Test of the two-match series.

The first India vs Sri Lanka Test is scheduled to begin on August 15 at the Galle International Stadium, with India looking to make a strong start to their 2025-27 World Test Championship campaign.

Shubman Gill Injury Update Ahead of Sri Lanka Test

Gill suffered the finger injury during India's training session on August 6 in Colombo.

The India captain was subsequently rested for the first two days of India's three-day warm-up match against Sri Lanka Cricket XI. The decision immediately prompted questions over whether the injury could prevent Gill from taking part in the opening Test.

However, the team management opted for caution rather than risk aggravating the problem during a practice fixture.

Gill returned to action on the final day of the warm-up match and appeared comfortable throughout his innings.

Batting at the top of the order, he scored 44 runs from 54 balls, hitting seven boundaries as India successfully chased down 207 runs to complete a six-wicket victory.

His return provided an important indication that the injury was no longer restricting him.

Sairaj Bahutule Confirms Gill Is Fit

Bahutule subsequently put an end to the uncertainty surrounding the India captain's fitness.

The spin-bowling coach explained that Gill's absence from the early stages of the warm-up game had been precautionary rather than a sign of a serious injury.

"It was just a precaution more than anything else. And he has been absolutely fine. He has been doing his training," Bahutule said.

The India coaching staff had deliberately avoided exposing Gill to unnecessary risk before the Test series.

"The management decided that we could just take that precaution of not putting him into that first day of the practice match."

Gill's performance when he returned to the field further reassured the management.

Bahutule was particularly pleased with the manner in which the captain batted during the second innings.

"The way he batted in the second inning was again flawless. He is very much ready for the Test match," he added.

India Receive Timely Boost Amid Injury Problems

Gill's fitness is particularly important given the number of injury problems India have faced ahead of the Sri Lanka tour.

Jasprit Bumrah has already been ruled out of the two-Test series because of a knee issue, with Jammu and Kashmir pacer Auqib Nabi brought into the squad as his replacement.

India have also lost Sai Sudharsan, who was ruled out after suffering a toe stress fracture. Sarfaraz Khan was subsequently called up to replace him in the Test squad.

Other players unavailable to India include Harshit Rana, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Akash Deep, while Washington Sundar is also unavailable for at least the opening Test.

With several options already missing, losing Gill would have created another major problem for India's batting order and leadership group.

His return therefore gives India some much-needed stability ahead of the series opener.

Gill's Role Crucial for India in Galle

Gill will enter the Sri Lanka series with significant responsibility after taking over as India's Test captain.

The 26-year-old will have to balance his leadership duties with the demands of batting near the top of the order, particularly as India look to strengthen their position in the World Test Championship standings.

India currently sit fifth in the WTC table, having recorded four wins and four defeats from their nine matches so far.

The two Tests in Sri Lanka therefore represent an important opportunity to collect valuable points.

Gill's ability to take the field also allows India to avoid another late change to their top order after Sudharsan's withdrawal.

India vs Sri Lanka Test Series Schedule

The first Test between India and Sri Lanka will begin on August 15 at Galle International Stadium.

The second Test is scheduled to start on August 23 at the SSC in Colombo.

India will hope their captain's successful return in the warm-up match translates into a strong performance when the Test series officially gets underway.

For now, the immediate concern surrounding Gill has been settled.

Shubman Gill is fit, has returned to batting and is expected to lead India in the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle.
