Pakistan’s disastrous England tour has taken another painful turn, with the team docked 11 points in the ongoing World Test Championship cycle for maintaining a slow over-rate during the final Test at Edgbaston.
The sanction comes alongside a 50 per cent fine for the Pakistan players, adding to the misery of a 3-0 series defeat against England.
Pakistan lost the Edgbaston Test by eight wickets after failing to defend a target of 130, completing a miserable end to a deeply troubled tour.
Pakistan Fell 11 Overs Short at Edgbaston
Pakistan bowled 89 overs during their first bowling innings at Edgbaston and were found to be 11 overs short of the required rate after time allowances were taken into consideration.
Under Article 16.11.2 of the ICC World Test Championship playing conditions, teams are penalised one WTC point for every over they fall short.
That resulted in Pakistan losing 11 points from their WTC tally.
The players were also punished under Article 2.22 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which imposes a five per cent match-fee fine for every over missed.
With the penalty capped at 50 per cent, Pakistan’s players received the maximum possible fine.
Pakistan's WTC Hopes Effectively Over
The points deduction is particularly damaging because Pakistan were already at the bottom of the WTC standings.
Following the sanction, Pakistan's points percentage has fallen to just 4.63 after nine Tests across four series in the current championship cycle.
The latest deduction effectively eliminates any realistic possibility of Pakistan reaching the World Test Championship final.
The team will now have to focus on rebuilding its Test side rather than competing for a place in the WTC title decider.
Troubled England Tour Ends in Disaster
The slow over-rate sanction adds another chapter to Pakistan’s chaotic England tour.
Seven players were sent home after the second Test at Lord’s, while head coach Sarfaraz Ahmed was also removed from his position.
White-ball coach Mike Hesson was subsequently handed interim charge as Pakistan prepared for the final Test in Birmingham.
Despite the changes, Pakistan suffered another defeat at Edgbaston to complete a 3-0 series whitewash.
Pakistan Have More Tests Ahead
Pakistan’s WTC campaign may effectively be over, but their Test schedule continues.
They are scheduled to host Sri Lanka for a two-Test series in November before New Zealand tour Pakistan in 2027.
For Pakistan, those series will provide an opportunity to begin rebuilding after one of their most difficult Test campaigns in recent memory.
However, the 11-point deduction at Edgbaston means the damage from their England tour will extend well beyond the 3-0 series defeat.
