SRH Win Big in CSK Trade, While Chennai Take a Huge Gamble on Livingstone

The Chennai Super Kings and Sunrisers Hyderabad have completed a four-player trade ahead of the IPL 2027 season, with Liam Livingstone and Jack Edwards moving to CSK in exchange for Khaleel Ahmed and Nathan Ellis. On paper, it is a significant reshuffle for both franchises. But when the players' roles, squad requirements and potential impact are considered, Sunrisers Hyderabad appear to have emerged with a considerably stronger hand.

CSK have acquired an experienced overseas batting allrounder in Livingstone and an emerging Australian seam-bowling allrounder in Edwards. However, the price of those additions is substantial. Chennai have surrendered two genuine fast bowlers, including an Indian left-arm quick and an overseas death-bowling specialist with the potential to become one of the most effective T20 bowlers in the world.

For SRH, the trade addresses a potential weakness in their bowling resources without significantly disrupting their batting-heavy core. With uncertainty surrounding Pat Cummins' availability for the upcoming season, acquiring Ellis and Khaleel gives Hyderabad valuable insurance and greater flexibility.

It is difficult to look at the deal without questioning CSK's decision-making. Livingstone has undeniable ability, but his recent IPL returns raise questions about whether he is worth sacrificing two specialist fast bowlers. SRH, meanwhile, have turned two players who struggled to find regular opportunities into two valuable additions to their bowling attack.

The Four-Player Trade: Who Moves Where?

The trade sees two players move in each direction, with a significant difference in the fees attached to them.

PlayerPrevious TeamNew TeamIPL Fee
Liam LivingstoneSRHCSKINR 6 crore
Jack EdwardsSRHCSKINR 3 crore
Khaleel AhmedCSKSRHINR 4.8 crore
Nathan EllisCSKSRHINR 2 crore

Livingstone was originally acquired by SRH for INR 13 crore at the 2026 auction but will join CSK at a reduced fee of INR 6 crore. Edwards moves at his existing fee of INR 3 crore, having been signed for that amount at the previous auction.

Khaleel and Ellis were acquired by CSK for INR 4.8 crore and INR 2 crore respectively. Both had injury-disrupted IPL 2026 campaigns, but their underlying value as specialist fast bowlers remains significant.

The financial adjustment makes Livingstone a relatively affordable acquisition for CSK compared to his previous price. However, the central question is not whether Chennai have secured a discount. It is whether that discount justifies the loss of two bowlers who address specific and important roles.

SRH Address Their Biggest Potential Concern

The most compelling aspect of this trade from Hyderabad's perspective is the addition of Nathan Ellis.

Pat Cummins' availability for IPL 2027 remains an important consideration for SRH. The Australian captain has been central to their plans, but any uncertainty over his participation creates a potential problem for a side that needs reliable overseas pace options.

Ellis provides an immediate solution. He is an experienced T20 fast bowler who can operate in the middle overs and, more importantly, deliver at the death. His variations, slower deliveries and ability to execute yorkers make him particularly valuable in a format where death bowling can determine the outcome of matches.

He was expected to play a major role for CSK in IPL 2026, effectively taking on responsibilities associated with the departure of Matheesha Pathirana. Unfortunately, a hamstring injury sustained before the tournament ruled him out of the entire season.

His IPL career with Chennai therefore amounted to just one appearance across two seasons. That limited involvement should not be mistaken for a lack of quality. Ellis has established himself as a dependable T20 option across franchise cricket and international cricket, and SRH have secured him without having to spend another auction purse allocation.

If Cummins is unavailable, Ellis could become a key component of the Hyderabad attack. If Cummins is available, SRH have the luxury of adding another specialist fast bowler to their options.

That is a valuable position for a franchise to be in.

Khaleel Ahmed Gives SRH an Indian Left-Arm Option

The acquisition of Khaleel Ahmed is arguably just as important from a squad-building perspective.

Indian left-arm fast bowlers are valuable commodities in the IPL, particularly those capable of bowling in the powerplay. Khaleel offers a different angle to the attack, can exploit movement with the new ball and provides an Indian option who does not occupy an overseas slot.

He is also familiar with the Sunrisers setup, having represented the franchise between 2018 and 2021. His return gives SRH a bowler who already understands the environment and can slot into their plans without a major adjustment.

Khaleel featured in five matches for CSK during IPL 2026 before a quadriceps injury ended his campaign. His season was therefore too short to draw meaningful conclusions about his overall value.

At SRH, he could form an interesting left-arm combination with T Natarajan, who was also acquired through a trade from Delhi Capitals. Having two Indian left-arm seamers gives the franchise flexibility in constructing its bowling attack, particularly when balancing powerplay and middle-over responsibilities.

The combination of Khaleel and Ellis also addresses two different requirements. One provides Indian left-arm pace and new-ball options; the other offers overseas experience and death-bowling skills.

For a team whose batting has already been one of its biggest strengths, this is a significant investment in the area where additional depth can make the greatest difference.

CSK Get a Proven T20 Match-Winner in Liam Livingstone

It would be unfair to suggest that CSK have acquired an ordinary player. Livingstone is one of the most explosive batters in T20 cricket when he is in form.

The England allrounder has scored 8,595 runs in 370 T20 matches, alongside 171 wickets. He can clear the boundary against both pace and spin, has the ability to change a match in a matter of overs and offers useful bowling options through his legspin and offspin.

For CSK, the attraction is obvious. They have acquired an experienced middle-order batter who can provide power against spin and pace, while also offering a sixth bowling option when required.

Livingstone's versatility could be particularly useful on surfaces where CSK want additional spin options. His ability to bowl both legbreaks and offbreaks gives the captain flexibility depending on the opposition's batting combination.

The problem is his recent IPL output.

After winning the title with Royal Challengers Bengaluru in IPL 2025, Livingstone was signed by SRH for INR 13 crore. However, he featured in just two matches for Hyderabad in the following season. His recent European T20 Premier League campaign also produced 219 runs in ten innings at a strike rate of 128.82, which is not particularly impressive for a batter whose biggest selling point is explosive scoring.

The reduced fee of INR 6 crore makes the acquisition less financially risky for CSK. But the franchise will need much more than occasional cameos from Livingstone to justify the overall cost of this trade.

He has the ability to be a match-winner, but CSK are betting on him rediscovering his best form.

Jack Edwards: An Interesting Addition, but Not Yet a Proven IPL Commodity

Jack Edwards is a different type of acquisition for CSK.

The Australian seam-bowling allrounder was signed by SRH for INR 3 crore at the previous auction but missed the entire IPL 2026 season with a foot injury. He is yet to make his IPL debut, meaning Chennai are acquiring potential rather than a proven performer in the competition.

Edwards has, however, made encouraging progress in Australian cricket. He made his ODI and T20I debuts for Australia in 2026 and took a five-wicket haul in just his second ODI, against South Africa in Johannesburg.

He has also been a key player for Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash League and has experience playing in the Major League Cricket competition for Washington Freedom.

His seam-bowling ability and lower-order batting could make him a useful squad option. CSK will hope he can develop into a reliable allrounder who contributes in both departments.

There is certainly a case for acquiring a young Australian player with international potential. But Edwards is not yet an established IPL performer, and his value should be assessed accordingly.

The question is whether his upside, combined with Livingstone's batting, is enough to compensate for the two specialist fast bowlers Chennai have given up.

There is still a long way to go before IPL 2027, and the true value of this trade will only become clear once the players take the field. Livingstone could rediscover his best form at CSK, Edwards could emerge as a valuable allrounder, and injuries could yet influence how Khaleel and Ellis perform for SRH.

But based on squad requirements, player roles and the potential impact of each acquisition, Sunrisers Hyderabad appear to have won this trade comfortably.

It may be too early to call this one of the worst trades in IPL history, but CSK have certainly taken a gamble that could look very expensive if Livingstone fails to deliver. SRH, meanwhile, have addressed a potential weakness in their squad with two players who could become important pieces of their IPL 2027 campaign.
