Chennai Super Kings Overhaul Coaching Staff as Zaheer Khan Era Begins

Chennai Super Kings have confirmed a major overhaul of their coaching staff ahead of IPL 2027, with several long-serving members leaving the franchise as it prepares for a fresh start under new head coach Zaheer Khan.

Batting coach Mike Hussey and bowling coach Eric Simons are among those departing, bringing an end to their association with the five-time champions. Strength and conditioning coach Greg King, physiotherapist Tommy Simsek and assistant batting coach Rajiv Kumar have also been listed among the exits.

The changes follow a difficult period for CSK, who have failed to qualify for the playoffs in the last two seasons. The franchise is now preparing for a new chapter after ending its long association with head coach Stephen Fleming.

Mike Hussey and Eric Simons Among Major Departures

Hussey had been a familiar figure in the CSK setup since the franchise's early years. After representing the team as a player for six seasons, he became its batting coach in 2018.

Announcing his departure, CSK paid tribute to his contribution both on the field and in the development of its players.

The franchise highlighted Hussey's commitment and influence over the years, describing his place in its history as special. His exit marks the end of a significant chapter for a coaching group that remained relatively stable through much of CSK's successful period.

Simons is also leaving after serving as bowling coach since 2018. CSK credited the former coach with helping shape its bowling unit and contributing to the team's achievements during his tenure.

Former India fast bowler Mohit Sharma has been brought in to replace Simons as bowling coach.

CSK Make Wider Changes to Backroom Staff

The departures extend beyond the batting and bowling departments.

Strength and conditioning coach Greg King and physiotherapist Tommy Simsek are also leaving the franchise, while assistant batting coach Rajiv Kumar will not be part of the coaching setup for IPL 2027.

Fielding coach James Foster is also set to depart, adding to the scale of the changes taking place behind the scenes.

The overhaul signals a significant shift in CSK's approach as the franchise attempts to rebuild after consecutive disappointing campaigns.

Replacing several experienced members of the support staff presents a challenge, particularly for a team that has traditionally valued continuity. The incoming coaching group will need to establish new working relationships and ensure that preparation, fitness, player development and tactical planning remain aligned.

CSK's Results Have Declined Since Their 2023 Title

CSK's recent results help explain the decision to make substantial changes.

The franchise won its fifth IPL title in 2023, drawing level with Mumbai Indians for the most championships at the time. However, its performances have declined since that triumph.

CSK finished fifth in 2024 before slipping to 10th place in 2025. They ended the 2026 season in eighth position, missing the playoffs for a second consecutive year.

The failure to reach the knockout stage in either of the last two seasons represented a significant setback for one of the IPL's most successful franchises.

The results also raised questions about the squad's direction and the coaching setup's ability to keep the team competitive. The latest changes suggest CSK are looking beyond short-term adjustments as they attempt to return to the playoffs.

Zaheer Khan Takes Over From Stephen Fleming

The coaching overhaul follows the departure of Stephen Fleming, who had been closely associated with CSK for many years.

Fleming's exit brings an end to a long-running partnership between the coach and franchise. He has moved on to take charge of England's Test team, while former India fast bowler Zaheer Khan has been appointed as his successor at CSK.

IPL 2027 will be Zaheer's first season in charge of the Super Kings. His appointment places him at the centre of the franchise's rebuilding effort, with the task of restoring consistency and improving results after two seasons outside the playoffs.

Zaheer will inherit a team with a strong history and an established identity, but one that needs to find a way back to sustained success. The changes to the coaching staff provide an opportunity to introduce fresh ideas and reassess the team's preparation and performance standards.

CSK Getting Desparate?

CSK's decision to reshape their coaching group reflects the scale of the challenge facing the franchise after consecutive playoff failures. The departures of Hussey and Simons are particularly notable because both had been part of the setup since 2018 and contributed to a period of sustained success.

However, changing the backroom staff alone will not guarantee an improvement. CSK must also ensure that their squad composition, player recruitment and tactical approach support the new coaching group's plans.

Zaheer Khan's first season will be an important test of the franchise's new direction. With several familiar faces leaving, IPL 2027 will reveal whether the changes can help CSK rediscover the consistency that made them one of the competition's most successful teams.
