Best IPL Captains of All Time

There have been plenty of successful captains in IPL history, but success in this competition is about more than simply lifting the trophy.

A great IPL captain has to build a team, manage personalities, make tactical decisions in a game where momentum can change within two or three balls, and deliver when the pressure is at its highest. Some captains have dominated for more than a decade. Others have transformed a franchise in just a couple of seasons.

Our ranking considers IPL titles, overall win record, consistency, playoff performances, longevity, tactical influence and the context in which those successes were achieved.

That is why this list does not simply rank captains by the number of trophies they have won.

1. MS Dhoni

Teams: Chennai Super Kings, Rising Pune Supergiant
IPL titles: 5
Captaincy record: 136 wins from 235 matches

There is a very strong argument that the debate over the best IPL captain ends with MS Dhoni.

Dhoni has been involved in virtually every era of the IPL and has combined longevity with extraordinary consistency. He has captained more IPL matches than anyone else and has also recorded the most wins as captain, with 136 victories in 235 matches.

More importantly, he has repeatedly delivered when the tournament reaches its decisive stages.

Dhoni led Chennai Super Kings to five IPL titles in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021 and 2023. CSK also reached the final numerous times during his tenure, making them one of the most consistently successful sides in T20 history.

What separates Dhoni from almost every other captain is the length of time he maintained that level.

His leadership was rarely about dramatic gestures. It was generally about staying calm, understanding match situations and trusting players in high-pressure moments. His famous tendency to back bowlers, make unconventional field changes and keep difficult decisions looking simple became part of the Dhoni trademark.

The two seasons he spent leading Rising Pune Supergiant after CSK were suspended are also relevant. His captaincy record encompasses a period when he was no longer operating with the extraordinarily settled CSK environment.

For longevity, trophies, wins and pressure handling, Dhoni remains the benchmark.

2. Rohit Sharma

Team: Mumbai Indians
IPL titles: 5
Captaincy record: 87 wins from 158 matches

If Dhoni is the benchmark, Rohit Sharma is the only captain who can genuinely claim to have matched him for sustained IPL success.

Rohit took over as Mumbai Indians captain midway through the 2013 season and transformed the franchise almost immediately. Mumbai went on to win the title in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020 under his leadership.

Five IPL titles is an extraordinary achievement.

What makes Rohit's record even more impressive is that those championships were spread across eight seasons rather than being concentrated into one dominant period. He consistently rebuilt Mumbai as players came and went, while maintaining a squad capable of competing at the top of the table.

His tactical instincts were also central to Mumbai's success. Rohit developed a reputation for making proactive bowling changes, using his all-rounders intelligently and staying willing to change plans during a match.

He has 87 wins in 158 matches as captain, giving him one of the strongest sustained records in the competition.

The reason he sits second rather than first is largely longevity and volume. Dhoni has more wins, more captaincy appearances and a slightly better overall win percentage.

But the gap is small.

3. Gautam Gambhir

Teams: Delhi Daredevils, Kolkata Knight Riders
IPL titles: 2
Captaincy record: 71 wins from 129 matches

Gautam Gambhir does not have five trophies like Dhoni or Rohit, but his impact on Kolkata Knight Riders deserves enormous credit.

When Gambhir took over as KKR captain, the franchise had yet to establish itself as a consistent contender. Under his leadership, that changed dramatically.

KKR won the IPL in 2012 and 2014, with Gambhir providing both tactical direction and an aggressive personality that became central to the team's identity.

He also accumulated 71 wins in 129 matches as captain, placing him third in the all-time list for captaincy wins.

Gambhir's greatest strength was arguably his ability to impose a competitive mindset on a team. KKR under Gambhir were rarely passive. They were often aggressive, difficult opponents who played with a clear sense of purpose.

His captaincy was particularly valuable because KKR were not simply buying a collection of superstar names and hoping they would click. Gambhir helped create a functioning unit.

The two titles, 71 wins and the transformation of KKR make him one of the strongest candidates for third place.

4. Shreyas Iyer

Teams: Delhi Capitals, Kolkata Knight Riders, Punjab Kings
IPL titles: 1
Captaincy record: 54 wins from 94 matches

Shreyas Iyer is perhaps the most interesting name on this list because his captaincy career is still relatively young compared with the legends above him.

Yet his record already demands attention.

Iyer has led three different franchises to IPL finals. He took Delhi Capitals to the 2020 final, captained Kolkata Knight Riders to the title in 2024 and then led Punjab Kings to the final in 2025.

By the end of the 2026 season, Iyer had 54 wins in 94 matches as captain, giving him an exceptionally strong record. His 60.43% win rate was reported as the highest among IPL captains with at least 50 matches at the time of his 2026 campaign.

That combination of results is difficult to ignore.

Iyer has also shown that he can adapt to very different teams. His Delhi side, championship-winning KKR team and Punjab Kings side all had different identities and squad constructions.

He does not have the longevity or number of titles required to challenge Dhoni or Rohit yet. But purely on the quality of his start, Iyer already belongs among the IPL's best captains.

5. Shane Warne

Team: Rajasthan Royals
IPL titles: 1
Captaincy record: 30 wins from 55 matches

Shane Warne's place in this list is based as much on context as it is on statistics.

Rajasthan Royals did not enter the inaugural IPL season as an obvious title favourite. Their squad was relatively light on established superstar names compared with several rivals.

Warne turned that group into champions.

Under his leadership, Rajasthan won the first IPL title in 2008, beating Chennai Super Kings in the final.

Warne also won 30 of his 55 matches as captain, a remarkably strong record given the circumstances.

But his real contribution went beyond results. He was central to identifying and backing players who would go on to become major stars, and he was willing to use tactics that were unconventional for the time.

The 2008 title remains one of the great examples of a captain extracting more from a squad than its collection of names suggested.

That is why Warne ranks above several captains with more impressive raw numbers.

6. Hardik Pandya

Teams: Gujarat Titans, Mumbai Indians
IPL titles: 1
Captaincy record: 37 wins from 66 matches

Hardik Pandya's captaincy career has already had some remarkable highs.

He became Gujarat Titans' first captain in 2022 and immediately led the new franchise to the IPL title.

Gujarat's championship in their debut season was one of the strongest examples of a newly created franchise succeeding immediately, and Hardik was central to the team's balance and competitive identity.

He then took Gujarat to another final in 2023.

Hardik's individual captaincy record is also strong. He has 37 wins from 66 matches, giving him a win rate above 56%.

His tenure with Mumbai Indians has been much more complicated, which is one reason he does not rank higher. The standard expected at MI is enormous, and the circumstances surrounding his appointment created significant pressure.

Still, his record with Gujarat is enough to make him one of the most successful modern IPL captains.

7. Rajat Patidar

Team: Royal Challengers Bengaluru
IPL titles: 2
Captaincy record: 20 wins from 28 matches

Rajat Patidar is the hardest player to rank on this list because his sample is still small.

But it would be strange to ignore what he has already achieved.

Patidar took over as Royal Challengers Bengaluru captain in 2025 and did something that previous generations of RCB leaders could not: he led the franchise to its first IPL title.

Then he did it again.

RCB won the 2025 and 2026 IPL titles, making Patidar only the third captain after Dhoni and Rohit Sharma to lead a team to back-to-back championships.

By the end of the 2026 season, Patidar had captained RCB in 28 matches, winning 20 and losing eight.

That is an extraordinary start to a captaincy career.

The reason he is not higher is simple: 28 matches is nowhere near enough to compare his overall body of work with Dhoni, Rohit or Gambhir.

But the trajectory is impossible to ignore.

If Patidar continues at anything close to this level, he will eventually move much higher on lists like this.

8. Sachin Tendulkar

Team: Mumbai Indians
IPL titles: 0
Captaincy record: 30 wins from 51 matches

Sachin Tendulkar never won the IPL as captain, but that does not make his leadership record ordinary.

He won 30 of his 51 matches as Mumbai Indians captain, giving him a 58.82% win rate. That remains one of the best captaincy records among the league's long-serving leaders.

More importantly, Tendulkar led Mumbai to their first IPL final in 2010, where they lost to Chennai Super Kings.

The 2010 campaign demonstrated Tendulkar's ability to lead through performance as well as authority. He was not simply a ceremonial captain. He remained the team's central batting force while carrying the strategic responsibility of leading a developing franchise.

His lack of an IPL title inevitably prevents him from ranking among the very top captains.

But judging Tendulkar only by trophies would miss how effective he was in the role.

9. David Warner

Teams: Sunrisers Hyderabad, Delhi Capitals
IPL title: 1
Captaincy record: 40 wins from 83 matches

David Warner's best captaincy work came at Sunrisers Hyderabad.

He led SRH to the 2016 IPL title, beating Royal Challengers Bengaluru in a memorable final in Bengaluru.

Warner's leadership style was completely different from Dhoni's. He was emotional, aggressive and intensely involved in the game. That personality often became part of Sunrisers' identity.

His overall captaincy record stands at 40 wins in 83 matches, but the broader impact of his leadership is best seen in what he achieved with SRH during their strongest period.

He was also an outstanding performer while captain, which gave the franchise another major advantage.

Warner's later years were less consistent, and that prevents him from climbing higher. But leading a franchise to its only IPL championship is a major achievement.

10. Virat Kohli

Team: Royal Challengers Bengaluru
IPL titles: 0 as captain
Captaincy record: 66 wins from 143 matches

Virat Kohli's position at No. 10 will probably generate the most debate.

On pure longevity and influence, he could easily be ranked higher.

Kohli captained 143 IPL matches and won 66, putting him among the top four IPL captains by total victories for much of the league's history.

He also led RCB to the playoffs on multiple occasions, including the extraordinary 2016 season when the team reached the final.

The obvious weakness is the absence of a title during his captaincy.

That matters because this is a ranking of the best IPL captains, rather than simply the greatest players who have served as captain.

Kohli nevertheless deserves a place because of the scale of his contribution. He spent more than a decade as RCB's central figure, handled enormous expectations and consistently kept the franchise competitive despite a lack of silverware.

His legacy as an IPL captain improved significantly after RCB finally won the title under Rajat Patidar in 2025, although Kohli's contribution to RCB's eventual championship came as a senior player rather than captain.

Who Is the Most Successful IPL Captain?

By almost any conventional measure, MS Dhoni is the most successful IPL captain.

He has five titles, 136 wins and 235 matches as captain. He also led Chennai Super Kings to a remarkable number of finals across his career.

Rohit Sharma is the closest challenger, with five titles of his own and 87 wins from 158 matches.

The interesting part of the debate is what happens after those two.

Gautam Gambhir has two titles. Shreyas Iyer has already taken three different teams to IPL finals. Shane Warne won the first IPL with an underdog Rajasthan Royals team. Hardik Pandya won the title with a brand-new Gujarat Titans franchise. And Rajat Patidar has now won consecutive titles in the first two seasons of his captaincy.

There is therefore no single metric that settles the argument.

Who Has Won the Most IPL Titles as Captain?

MS Dhoni and Rohit Sharma are tied for the record with five IPL titles each as captain.

Dhoni won with Chennai Super Kings in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021 and 2023.

Rohit Sharma won with Mumbai Indians in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020.

Rajat Patidar has now joined a small group of captains with back-to-back IPL championships after leading RCB to titles in 2025 and 2026.

Who Has the Best IPL Captaincy Win Percentage?

Among established captains with a substantial number of matches, Shreyas Iyer currently has one of the strongest records.

His 54 wins in 94 matches gives him a win rate of approximately 60.4%.

Sachin Tendulkar's 30 wins in 51 matches gives him a remarkable 58.82% record, while Dhoni's 136 wins in 235 matches put him close to 58%.

However, win percentage needs to be treated carefully.

A captain who has led a team for 200-plus matches has faced a much larger variety of situations than someone with 20 or 30 matches. Longevity therefore matters when deciding who is truly the best.

What Makes a Great IPL Captain?

The best IPL captains tend to share a few important qualities.

They understand T20 cricket

T20 cricket leaves almost no room for slow tactical adjustment. Captains need to anticipate what is going to happen rather than simply react to it.

They manage people

An IPL dressing room can contain international superstars, young uncapped players, overseas recruits and established Indian internationals. Keeping all of them invested is a major part of the job.

They remain calm under pressure

A captain's biggest decisions often come when a match is moving rapidly away from his team.

Dhoni's composure, Rohit's tactical flexibility and Gambhir's intensity all show different ways of handling that pressure.

They create a team identity

The most successful IPL sides often have a clear personality.

CSK under Dhoni became associated with stability and composure. Mumbai Indians under Rohit developed a ruthless winning mentality. Gambhir turned KKR into a much more aggressive and competitive unit.

That kind of identity tends to survive individual players.

Best IPL Captains: The Final Ranking

There is no perfect mathematical formula for ranking IPL captains. Titles matter, but so do longevity, win rate, tactical influence and the circumstances in which those victories came.

For now, our ranking is:

  1. MS Dhoni
  2. Rohit Sharma
  3. Gautam Gambhir
  4. Shreyas Iyer
  5. Shane Warne
  6. Hardik Pandya
  7. Rajat Patidar
  8. Sachin Tendulkar
  9. David Warner
  10. Virat Kohli

Dhoni remains the standard against which every IPL captain is measured. Rohit has matched him for trophies, while Gambhir demonstrated how powerful a captain can be in transforming a franchise.

The next generation is already making the debate more interesting. Shreyas Iyer has built an impressive multi-team record, while Rajat Patidar has started his captaincy career with two consecutive championships.

That is perhaps the most exciting thing about IPL captaincy: the list is never quite finished.
