Bangladesh All but Seal 2027 World Cup Spot After Afghanistan Win
Bangladesh are on the verge of securing a direct place at the 2027 ODI World Cup after Afghanistan's emphatic victory over Ireland significantly reduced the chances of the West Indies overtaking them in the ICC rankings.
Afghanistan's 92-run win in the second ODI of their five-match series with Ireland has left Bangladesh in a strong position ahead of the September 30 qualification cut-off.
According to Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officials, the Tigers are now effectively through to the tournament based on the current qualification calculations.
Bangladesh in Strong Position for Direct Qualification
The 2027 ODI World Cup will be hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, with the hosts and the highest-ranked teams securing direct qualification.
South Africa are currently among the top-ranked ODI sides, meaning the ninth-ranked team at the September 30 cut-off is also expected to qualify directly.
Bangladesh currently occupy ninth place with 83 points, six points ahead of the West Indies, who sit 10th with 77.
Afghanistan are further ahead on 90 points.
The gap leaves Bangladesh in a highly favourable position with the qualification deadline approaching.
West Indies Face Another Qualifying Campaign
The biggest threat to Bangladesh's position comes from the West Indies.
The Caribbean side have two ODIs remaining before the September 30 cut-off, both against India during their upcoming white-ball tour.
However, even winning both matches would not be enough to guarantee that they overtake Bangladesh.
A BCB official explained that West Indies can gain a maximum of four points from their remaining matches, while Bangladesh are scheduled to have three opportunities to add points before the deadline.
That leaves Bangladesh with a significant advantage heading into the final stage of the qualification race.
India Series Could Strengthen Bangladesh's Position
Bangladesh were scheduled to host India for three ODIs on September 1, 3 and 6.
However, the series remains uncertain, with no final confirmation on whether the matches will go ahead as originally planned.
The BCB has expressed its intention to host the series, but any rescheduling could prove difficult because both teams have crowded international calendars.
Even if the matches are played before the qualification deadline, Bangladesh's position is unlikely to suffer significantly.
India currently sit at the top of the ODI rankings, meaning Bangladesh would be expected to gain fewer ranking points from victories against them than they would against a lower-ranked opponent.
Afghanistan's Win Changes the Picture
The result in Afghanistan's series against Ireland has played an important role in the qualification calculations.
Before the series, West Indies still had a route into the top eight.
Had Ireland won the five-match series 4-1 or 5-0, two West Indies victories against India could potentially have been enough to move them ahead of Bangladesh.
Afghanistan's 92-run victory has made that scenario far less likely.
The first match of the Afghanistan-Ireland series was already abandoned, leaving Ireland with fewer opportunities to gain ground.
West Indies' World Cup Qualification Problems Continue
The West Indies now face the possibility of missing out on automatic qualification for a third successive ODI World Cup.
They missed direct qualification for the 2019 and 2023 editions.
Although the West Indies eventually made it to the 2019 tournament through the qualifying route, they failed to progress through the qualifiers ahead of the 2023 World Cup in India.
Another qualification campaign would be a major blow for one of international cricket's traditional powers.
For Bangladesh, meanwhile, the latest developments mean their place at the 2027 World Cup is increasingly secure.
Bangladesh Still Have Work to Do
While Bangladesh's position looks extremely strong, the qualification process will not be officially settled until the rankings are finalised after the September 30 cut-off.
The Tigers therefore remain focused on their remaining ODI fixtures, while the uncertainty surrounding the India series adds another layer to the equation.
For now, however, Bangladesh can take considerable comfort from the latest results.
Direct qualification for the 2027 ODI World Cup is now firmly within their grasp.
